At the Simmons School of Social Work MSW students focus on clinical direct care through a curriculum that combines education and practice with social justice values and multicultural perspectives. Thus, students take classes on racism and oppression, assessment and diagnosis, human behavior, social welfare policy, research, and program evaluation. This two-year program can be shortened into fifteen months through an accelerated track, or it can be lengthened to thirty-two months for those who wish to take classes at a slower clip. All students, however, must complete a minimum of 1,120 hours of field placement in an approved agency.
Even though all Simmons’ MSW students study clinical social work, they can enroll in one of four specialized courses of study: child and family, mental health and addictions, trauma and interpersonal violence, and the individualized course of study (ICS). ICS students design their academic experience around their specific interests and career goals, working closely with faculty to investigate niche areas of practice and to develop skills working with diverse populations.

At the University of Tennessee Knoxville you can earn advanced certification in gerontology, trauma, veterinary social work, or a school social work licensure alongside the Master of Social Work degree. You won’t just take advanced electives when gaining certification, you’ll engage in specific field studies to have hands-on experience. Outside of these advanced standings, MSW students at UT Knoxville enroll in one of the two traditional social work tracks: the macro, community and organization track or the clinical, direct practice track.
The latter clinical concentration is heavily steeped in evidence-based interpersonal practice and prepares students to work in community mental health centers, nonprofit agencies, psychiatric clinics, schools, hospitals, prisons, and (of course) private practices. The organizational leadership track equally equips students, who find work in management, social-economic development, in all levels of government, and in nonprofit organizations.
